What is a Quartz Kiln?

Why put an element in a quartz tube?
When you insert a metal mandrel with a glass bead on the end, and you happen to touch an exposed electrical heating element coil with the metal mandrel you will get an electric shock. To solve this problem, HotGlass invented and produced the first kiln to use the unique feature of placing a protective quartz glass coating around the element. This prevents a metal mandrel from touching an element causing electric shock. This tube also supports the element.
The protection for the Modular Stacking Style Kilns are done by placing the element in an the out of the way area of the kiln and using a safety screen. Both methods work quite well.
